Exploring Richmond: The American Civil War Museum at Historic Tredegar

The American Civil War Museum at the Historic Tredegar is well worth the visit if you're in Richmond, with an extensive collection offering perspectives of Union, Confederate, and African American participants on both the local and national levels.

In the beginning of January, Retex's Josh and Kaelyn Lewis were able to explore the museum and surrounding grounds. These photos are from their visit.

By 1960, the Tredegar Iron Works was the largest iron works plant in the South, and it was a major component in the Confederacy's capital relocation from Montgomery to Richmond. It produced iron plating for the CSS Virginia, the first Confederate ironclad warship, as well as 1,100 artillery pieces during the war – about half of the Confederate's total production, according to the National Park Service.

And, interestingly, the Tredegar building is one of the few Civil War-era buildings that survived the burning of Richmond as the Union Army protected it from the Confederate Army's fiery retreat in April 1865.
