Exploring Richmond: The James River

Why do people call the James River the "Mighty James"?

JAMES RIVER

Not only is the James River the largest river in Virginia – it stretches 312 miles, from the Appalachian Mountains to the Chesapeake Bay, and is fed by 25,000 miles of tributaries – it’s also one of the longest rivers in America that begins and ends within the same state, according to the James River Association.

Named after King James I during the first English settlement in the Americas, the James has flown by all of the state’s capitals (Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Richmond), and its watershed spans 10,000 square miles, serving a third of all Virginians.

Or, perhaps the “Mighty James” title has to do with the Falls of the James: A 105-foot drop over seven miles, providing Class 1 to Class 5 rapids and representing the only white water to cut through the heart of an urban area.

If you’re local or visiting Richmond this summer, we highly recommend spending a morning, afternoon, or day exploring the James River and its surrounding trails. You can access the river and wade in at multiple points, from Pony Pasture to Belle Isle, and bring a picnic to enjoy – just be sure to pick up after yourself when you leave. You also have access to hiking, biking, and running trailers throughout the 500-acre James River Park system. And if you’d like to try out those rapids, reach out to outdoor rec services like Riverside Outfitters, which offers both guided and self-guided tubing and rafting tours.

We love getting to know our city’s natural landmarks better. Meanwhile, if you’re a Richmond homeowner in need of help with your roof, siding, windows, or gutters, give us a call at 804-258-6300. We’d love to provide you with a no-pressure free estimate.
