Does Your Roof Have Sun Blisters Or Hail Damage?

Katelyn Lewis • August 25, 2022

Did you know your roof can get blisters, just like your feet after a long run?

These small bumps on your roof boil down to heat, moisture, and friction.

Roof blisters are a sign of poor ventilation. Heat rises within your home, entering your attic space, while the sun cooks your shingles from the outside. With improper ventilation, the heat pressuring both sides of your roof causes any moisture to “boil,” leading to roof blisters.

Roof blisters occur on older roofs, improperly manufactured shingles, and improperly installed roofs. And they can be a headache for homeowners as they’re not covered by homeowners’ insurance like hail damage is even though they may look very similar.

Blistering appears to have almost a volcanic, raised-area appearance, showing the residue of the blister popping, while hail will cause divots or dents in your roof. Other, perhaps easier signs to tell the difference between the two include checking your flashing and vent covers for any dents, as well as your gutters for an accumulation of granules. Roof blisters tend to pop one at a time over a long period, so they’re less likely to fill your gutters with granules than a single hail storm event might.

And, as always, it’s wise to get a professional opinion to determine the cause. At Retex Roofing & Exteriors, we offer complimentary roof assessments so you can gain peace of mind while bolstering your roof’s defense against the next storm.
