Will A Metal Roof Attract Lightning?

Katelyn Lewis • April 5, 2023

A common fear around metal roofs is that they may attract lightning. Let’s break down the science behind this myth.

Metal roofs do not attract lightning, but – as they’re metal – they can conduct electrical currents if struck by lightning. Still, that does not necessarily mean there’s a risk to you or your neighbors if a lightning strike hits your metal roof.

The likelihood of a building being struck by lightning depends more on its height, location, and the weather conditions than the type of roof it has.

And while it’s possible for a metal roof struck by lightning to cause a house fire, it’s relatively rare. About 4% of all lightning strikes result in a fire, with only a small fraction of those fires caused by a metal roof being struck by lightning, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

If lightning
were to strike your metal roof, it’s possible the electrical current would travel through the metal and potentially hurt anyone in contact with it. So, word of advice: Don’t touch your metal roof during a thunderstorm. In fact, stay inside or seek shelter if there’s a thunderstorm.

Foof, glad we addressed that fear. And if you’re interested in putting a metal roof on your home, give us a call at 804-258-6300 for a free estimate today.
